WAR  is HELL.  Sadly, many jealously hateful nations have put tiny Israel through hell many times.  Instead of becoming Sparta, Israel is far outshining Athens.

Last night this author of Wars of the Jews was at the swearing-in ceremony of new Israel Defence Forces paratroopers.  Hear the Hope for peace in the video.

The entry,  Sir:

GUERR(ILLA)    GaRaH    Gimel-Resh-Hey
GUR-RAH_________גרה  ___     _______[GRH]
ROOTS: A GUERRILLA is an irregular soldier (or a terrorist whose cause a news editor espouses). Guerra is skirmishing warfare in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese; the French spell it guerre.
גר   GahR is to quarrel, as in Deuteronomy 2:9 - 'neither contend with them in battle.' An extension of    גרהGahRaH ('strive' - Jeremiah 50:24) is  תגרה TiGRaH (strife, contention, conflict).

The  ג-רGimel-Resh or G-R of strangers and migrants – see MIGRATE – was often behind wars.           הרג  HeReG, killing,  shares the  גרה Gimel-Resh-Hey of our etymon.  Related  ה-רHet-Resh or guttural-liquid war words at HARROW and HARRY.

BRANCHES:   Gutturals plus R make an aggressive sound.   Like-sounding relatives of  גרה   GaRaH (to provoke) include  חרחור K[H]eeRK[H]OOR (quarreling),חרחר  K[H]eeRK[H]aiR (to provoke strife);   נחרה NeeK[H]aRaH (to contend - Isaiah 41:11),   התחרה HeeTK[H]aRaH (to compete, rival),  קרב Q’RaBH (battle - Psalms 144:1),  חרב K[H]eReBH (sword, destruction – see HARPOON) and חרום  K[H]aROOM (state of war).

One still hears the guttural-liquid sound of war in    K[H]aYiL (army) and reversing guttural-liquid bears          לחם  LoaK[H]aM (to wage war).   The sound of  חרב  K[H]eReBH (sword; a figurative term for 'war' - Genesis 31:27) rattles above the words for 'war' in Arabic and Turkish harb, as well as Hungarian haboru (switch B and R).  See RIFT.

The AHD attempts to link 'guerrilla' with WAR, LIVERWURST, WORSE, WORST and WURST at the IE “root” wers (to confuse, mix up). This confusion is a metathesis of  ערוב  [A]iROO(V) (mixture, confusion - RV --> WR and harks back to the   בלל BaLaL (mix, confuse - BL --> WR)  back in Genesis 11:9.   See RIVALRY.
ריב ReeY(V) is a quarel.   RIValry and RIFt have the Resh-Bhet that reverses to make WAR.

There are two paths to the etymology of QUARREL. First, there are the Hebrew etymons in this entry. Second, there is the given IE “root” kwes (to pant, wheeze). Similarly, either  גרה  GahRaH (reversed, with a harsher guttural) or HeReG might be behind German Kreig (war), that gave English BLITZKREIG (see “GRAVE”). The Scandinavian languages all use krig, but Dutch war, oorlog, suggests a similar etymon as Kreig -- where the guttural has softened to a vowel.

The root doctors didn't completely miss out on a GR or KR term for 'war.'   Indo-European (IE) koro means war, war-band, host and army.  חיל  [K]HaYiL (KL-->  KR) means host and army as well; appearing alongside  גרה  GahRaH in Daniel 11:25.

The words traced to IE koro include HARANGUE, HARBINGER, HARBOR, HARRY, HERALD, and HERIOT. Old English here is 'army.' Germanic hild (battle, war) gave us BRUNHILD, HILDA, HILDEBRAND and HILDEGARDE. (Hilda is nowhere linked to  חולדה [K]HOOLDaH the prophetess of II Chronicles 34:22).
More H-R violence at HARASS.

That bellicose ape, the GORILLA (a West African term), is possibly allied to the fighting GUERRILLA – see “GUERILLA”.   More likely, GORILLA was influenced by the ultimate source of CHURL (a rude, rustic or ill-bred man),  Britonic girlopp (lout), CARL and its IE “root” karlaz (man). These terms all probably evolved from    ערל[A]RaiL or GHoRaiL.  In Leviticus 19:23  GH-R-L infers that which is unripe, unsuitable and thus uncouth.  By Samuel 17:27 the term is negative and condescending, referring to a Philistine as 'uncircumcised' (thus unfinished, uncultivated and brutish). The word denotes stupidity in Jeremiah 9:25.
