SIGN        TSeeYOON         Tsadi-Yod-Vav-Noon

(T)SEE-OON          ציון      [(T)S-Y-N à S(G)N]

ROOTS: SIGN (pronounced sīn) is allegedly from Latin signum (mark, sign) and the Indo-European (IE)  “root” sek(w), to follow – treated at the  SHAG entry.  The linguists posit that a SIGN meant 'standard that one follows.'

Look to the Bible and to words like   ציון TSeeYOON (mark, signpost - II Kings 23:17).

ציון TSeeYOAN Zion is a key hill in Jerusalem, but is synonymous with Jerusalem, as in Isaiah 10:4. “ZION” further signifies all of Israel and the Promised Land. צין  TSeeYaiN is the verb (to mark, note, distinguish).

The hugely popular ANTI-ZIONISM is, therefore, a passionate hatred for Jews and their Sponsor. If ZION exists, then so does the specters of Objective Truth and Responsibility. Hating the palpable SIGN of our Creator infers a hatred of existence, of the miserable individual and group history that miscreants have made for themselves.  While there is a difference between the anti-Zionism of an imam and a Western atheist on campus, they both hate the visible SIGN that they are wrong.  If ZION were not crawling under their skin, they would merely ignore her with disdainful apathy.

The Anglicized TSeeYOAN gave rise to SION or ZION.  The mission of Biblical ZIONISM  was always to establish a society that would be a SIGN or standard for all to follow.  Mount ZION, ציון TSeeYOAN, was coopted by the Puritans who founded Boston. These Replacement Theologists saw Boston as the new Jerusalem, the “city upon a hill,” to be an exemplar for all as a new world of liberty from human tyrants and flaws.

סימן   $eeYMahN is a sign,  mark or SYMPTOM; the word is Post-Biblical-Hebrew (PBH) but attested in the Aramaic סימנא $eeYMaNAh .    More fricative-nasal “symbol” words  at SIMULATION.

An S-N (reversed) SIGN word, as in 'sign, wonder…thus “miracle' is    נס
Nai$, sign, ensign (flag), visible wondrous event, … miracle (Numbers 26:10).  The Post-Biblical-Hebrew סגנון $iGNOAN (sign, ensign, banner…style) is ultimately from the Noon-Sin ensign above.  But later Hebrew borrows that Greek and Latin  sign… word  to mean 'form.'

The reversed נס Nai$ may be the more important etymon for SIGN.  But the related ציון TSeeYOON flies publically in the entry heading because no reversal, only a mild letter shift, makes SIGN visible.

BRANCHES:   The Yod of  ציון TSeeYOON, most often rendered J, may have  hardened to a G here in words like  SIGNET or SIGNIFY.  In the same way, OGLE and Old Teutonic augon (eye) came from  עין  [E]YiN (eye).  Miracle, supernatural or mythic in Chinese is shen 神 X583.  It is a reversal with S-F of  נס Nai$, heavenly sign, wondrous event,  or miracle.

נסה Nah$ayH is to prove, test… for display as a sign (Genesis 22:1).  This again appears in a reversed,   S-F Chinese word.  Try, test, examine, bring to trial is   shen X584.  Chinese  山  Shᾱn X570 , mountain,  might also be a S-F of  נס  Nai$, ensign, banner standard held aloft, as the נס  Nai$ on a hill of Isaiah 30:17.  Mountains are often sacred in the Far East.  Echoing the Chinese  “mountain” with the closer form of נס  Nai$ is Korean mountain: 산 san. ( Korea was more isolated and rural, and so their vocabulary remained more conservative).

Turning over the Noon-Samekh  word, נס Nai$ (sign, standard, signal – Numbers 26:10), to see SN  and  SIGN, would mean that the G was added later.

Seun (a letter in Cantonese) is one of many SN or SM 'sign' terms - see 'SEMANTICS.'   Arabic zayn is beauty.  German schon (used  for fine weather or a beautiful person) may be another S-N term of something ideal and outstanding.   The Yiddish is schehn , while the Danish has hardened to skon.  The J in Norwegian skjonn (beautiful)  could be restoring the י  Yod of TSeeYOAN. The TSeeNaH  is a shield; see SHIELD for the shield-equals-sign equation.  The T in Norwegian tegn (sign) reflects the T side of  Tsadi, the צ TS in  ציון  TSiYOAN.

German Zeichen  (sign, token, omen, warning)  may be channeling a reversed  ח-ז  Het-Zayin  (S-G) of  חזה   K[H]aZaH, to see, predict,  or is an M213 metathesis of    חזוןK[H]aZOAN,  vision, prophecy, divine revelation.  See SIGHT at the SEE entry.

Secular, Semitically-challenged historical linguists believe that words are merely evolved animal SIGNALS.

Cognates of SIGN not pronounced with the GN of INSIGNIA include ASSIGN, CONSIGN, and DESIGN.

Spanish offers SN  “sign” words without the distraction of the G: seña  (sign), señal (sign), signal, mark and señalar  (designate, point out, mark.)
See  the SIMULATION entry.
