Do You SAVVY My Lingo ?

In a culture where idiot SAVANTS who professionally taste wine are considered wise, it is not surprising that the scholars make S-V SAVOR words cognate with SAPIENT and SAVVY. OK, I admit to sour grapes. The most SOPHisticated dish I can make is French toast.

SAVOIR-(FAIRE) $a[V]aR Samekh-Bhet-Resh

ROOTS: SAVOIR-FAIRE, a French term borrowed by English, means skill, tact or literally "to know how to do." We are concerned with only the "savoir" here, which is a cousin of SAVVY. SAVVY is from Spanish saber (to know); the Spanish and French words are both linked to Latin sapere (to have taste, to be wise). The IE “root” sep-1 and derivatives like SAPOR and SAVANT have the sounds and sense to match סבר $a[V]aR (to think). Edenic שבר Sa[V]aR with a ש Sin seems to infer careful consideration. The Biblical Aramaic and the Syriac are spelled with a Samech, סבר
$i[V]aR, and mean thinking, supposing and having an opinion (Daniel 7:5) . The Aramaic gave rise to the post-Biblical סביר $a[V]eeYR, reasoner, logician. There is also a difference between the kinds of “thinking” in the two spellings when a double root is considered. The second, ב-ר Bet-Resh element suggests an ultimate clarity: ברור BaROOR (lucid) and ברי BaReeY (certainly) – see PURE and VERY. The “thinking” stage, before this clarity, is either ש-ב
Shin-Bhet returning, repenting, or doing away with [alternatives] -- see SABBATICAL or ס-ב Samech-Bhet turning [thoughts] around
– see SWIVEL.

For the second part of SAVOIR-FAIRE, French faire (make, do), affect a liquid shift from פעל PH[A]haL (to do, make, act – Deuteronomy 33:11 –

Sagacity may also come from “sage” words of wise old age, see below.

BRANCHES: Other intelligent S-V terms include שעף Sa’[A]PH (thought - Job 4:13) and חשב[K]HaS(H)A[V] (to think, calculate, design with skill - Exodus 31:4). The term means "considered as" or "deemed to be" in Proverbs 17:28 - "Even a fool, if he keeps silent, is deemed wise." Cognates of SAVVY at IE “root” sep-1 (to taste, perceive) include SAGE, SAPID, SAPIENT, SAPOR, SAVANT and SAVOR. Only a hedonistic people would elevate their culinary chefs, experts of the SAVORY arts, to the level of SAVANTS.

Greek sophia (skill, intelligence, wisdom) should be related. That would take in PHILOSPHY and other -SOPHY terms like SOPHISM, SOPHISTICATED, SOPHISTRY and SOPHOMORE. An equivalent of SAVANT (wise thinker) was the title סבורא $a[V]OARAh, conferred in the Babylonian era when the Talmud was compiled.

In piel grammatial form, סבר $eeBeR means “he hoped for,” and recalls ASPIRE.

Homo SAPIENS are supposed to be thinkers. Edenics is only concerned with thinking, thus speaking, hominids. The Homo SAPIENS homeland is what prehistoric lore calls Eden. A theoretical gazillion years of pea-brained knuckle-walkers is of no significance in the study of language.
(At least language purged of the standard, illiterate notion that words are random signals evolved from simian signals.)

The Concise Dictionary of 26 Languages in Simultaneous Translations by Peter Bergman (Signet/ New American Library, 1968) is full of evidence of reversed cognates, but linguists have not wanted to notice. The examples relevent here include terms for thinking, like the French penser, Italian pensare, and Spanish/Portuguese pensar.

Only mildly disguised by the nasalization (extra N), these P-S thinking terms are reversals of ס-ב Samech-Bhet/S-B and סבר $a[V]aR or $aBHaR (to think). The invenetd Indo-European (IE) “root” as sep is quite good, but the linguists who reconstructed the root would never think of reversing it. An Edenicist might never think of linking PENSIVE to סבר $aBHaR were it not for the Latinate cognates above. The IE “root” offered for PENSIVE is (s)pen, to draw, stretch, spin. Reverse the fricative-bilabial of the sagacious words above to get German weise, a sage. WISE might possibly be from the related ס-ב Samekh-Bhet, סב, old man, grandfather (in Aramaic and Syriac) and Sin-Bhet, שב, old man (Aramaic too) and Sin-Yod-Bhet, שיב ,old man (I Kings 14:4). This would allow WISE and WISDOM not to be a cognate of “twit” at the made-up IE “root” weid (to see). This root is covered at VIDEO.

Another WISE derivative of ס-ב Samekh-Bhet reversed is Finnish viisas (wise). Yes, this post will finish.
