Roots

The dictionaries don't stop at the Greek asphaltos, but go on to state "probably of Semitic origin."

The etymons for what was originally a tarlike bitumen should include שפל SHaPHeL (low, ebb tide, depression), and  proper nouns like   שפלה      SH'FayLaH (lowland; now used for the the low, coastal plain of Israel) -- Joshua11:16.  The Dead Sea region of Israel (the lowest point on Earth) where ASPHALT was first developed is referred to by Aristotle as Lacas Asphaltis in Latin (from   Michael Bernet).

Branches

Back to the tarlike substance that made up early ASPHALT, SLOPPY primarily meant muddy. (Switch letters 2 and 3.) The same #2-#3 metathesis renders SLOPE.

SLOPE, too, is defined as falling ground, a slant, and land that drains into an ocean.

SLOB, slab in Irish, is mud or any sloppy, SLIPPERY surface. Sloppier yet is ZeBHheL  (dung, manure).  See SLIP and SPILL.

Other SH-P relatives include: ShaF[A]h (to flow or slope), (HiI)SHPeeYaH (to make slant),  SHePHeKH (pouring out, place of pouring out, SPOUTING, and  SHaPHaH (to incline, tilt). These S-P(H) words suggest etymons for SUPINE (sloping backwards), SPILE (spigot), SPILL (flow, drain), SPILLWAY (passageway for excess water) and, further down, for SUB. (Asfal is down and bottom in Arabic; SHeePOOLiM refers to bottom or lower parts.)

SHiPHeeY (hill, height), TSaBaR (to heap up), and TSePHeT (top of a pillar) are S-P(H) antonyms.

You might hear VALLEYin the second, Phey-Lamed / PH-L element ofSHiPHayLaH (lowland).

The  Pey-Lamed subroot conveys the theme of spilling or falling  – see  FALL.

See WALLOW for the given etymon of VALLEY.
