Roots

This confusing "defective verb" in English sues several different etymons for paternity. One definition is "to come to," as in "peace BE with you."  בא BAh is to come, or come to be. " . . . All he saith cometh surely to pass."  - ISamuel9:6.

The Indo-European “root” bheu (to be) does suggest a verb meaning to exist, rather than to come (to be). While Bet-Aleph, to come, has better sound correspondence, Aramaic הוה  HeVayH (be, imper.) is closer to the sense – and the bilabial shift from V to B is minor.  The plural imper. of  “to be” is   הוו HeVVoo. The Akkadian is ewu (to become), but the Syriac resembles the Aramaic in the heading which is common in Mishnaic Hebrew in The Sayings of the Fathers.

Job 37:6 retains the closest to the Proto-Semitic spelling and usage. In Biblical Hebrew there’s:  הוה HeVayH - "BE lord over thy brethren" - Genesis27:29.   In later Hebrew Hey-Vav-Hey could mean either “existed” or “present tense.   Most consider the related, principal name of the Eternal (as in Exodus 3:14) to mean  Was-Is-Will be.

Harkavy cites  הוי   HeBHeeY, which is closer to BE. The future  הוה HOABHeH, what will BE, is in Ecclesiastes 2:22.

Branches

Alleged cognates of BE from the Indo-European “root” bheu (to be) include FIAT, BONDAGE, BOUND, FUTURE. HUSBAND, PHYSICAL, PHYSICIAN, PHYSICS, PHYSIO-, PHYTO and PHYLUM.

BE, like WAS, is also linked to Indo-European base wes (stay, remain). This resembles YoSHeBH (dwell, sit), its S-V root reversed to V-S.

A different BE, the common prefix BE- in words like BENEATH or BETWEEN, means by, about, or near. The Hebrew Bet- prefix  B-, B' or BIH also means BY, at or WITH.
