Roots

Like so many slang terms, there is no etymon available for BONING UP (studying hard).

התבונן   HITBOANeN is to study    בינה  BeeYNaH is discriminating understanding (Isaiah 29:24), like תבונה T’BHOONaH (Deuteronomy 32:28) ;  הבין HaBHeeN is to understand or teach (Provers 1:2); BOAN is to discern - Deuteronomy32:10.

Branches

NahBHOAN is wise or discriminating, as BaYN means between. התבונן   (HIT)BoaNaiN is also to consider and reflect. After a bilabial shift of Bet/B-to-P, OPINE (to think, suppose) and OPINIONS are possibly related. There's also a cerebral BEAN to consider.  Analysis between factors, discrimination, is the kind of intelligence linking BaYN (between) and BiNaH (wisdom). The Bilabial-Nasal wisdom of China is echoed by Mandarin won and Cantonese gwan.  Mandarin bian is defined in the Xinhua dictionary as “distinguish, differentiate.”

Bible Verses
