This German wish, especially after a sneeze, is for one’s health or gesund.

( Guttural) Ayin-Zayin, עז  GHoaZ,  means strength (Genesis 49:3). The fierce impudence of

Ayin-Zayin named the עז  GHayZ  (goat – Genesis 38:17). A related guttural-fricative is  חזק K[H]aZahQ (strong – Deuteronomy 31:7).


Branches

Obvious cognates include Dutch gezondheid and Yiddish gezundheit.  Hungarian is not Germanic, but there is עז   GHoaZ (strength) in Hungarian “health:” egeszseg.  See HEALTH.
