Roots
Old Norse gjorth is the source of words
like GIRDLE and GIRTH. The Indo-European root gher means to grasp or enclose,
with derivatives meaning "enclosure." חגור
[K]HaGOOR is to
"gird" in Exodus29:9. חגור [K]HaGOAR or [K]HaGOARaH is a belt or
girdle.
For the Het-Gimel two-letter root that HUGS, see below.
Branches
סגור $aGooR (to close, shut in, lock)
establishes the Hebrew GR two-letter root which parallels the Indo-European root. (It
also may have influenced words like CIGAR(ETTE), SECRET and SECURE.) See
SECURE. Similarly, EGROAPH is a closed hand or fist (see GRIP at
GRAPPLE) -- an extension of OGahR (to gather, collect). DaGahR is a hatch.
Cognates of
GIRD and GIRDLE at Indo-European gher include CHOIR, CHORAL, CHORALE, CHORUS,
COHORT, CORTEGE, COURT (see COURT), COURTEOUS, COURTESAN, COURTESY,
COURTIER, CURTSY (see DEMOCRAT), GARDEN (see GARDEN from גדר
GeDeR, enclosure) , GARTH,
HORTICULTURE, KINDERGARTEN, ORCHARD, and YARD.
As usual,
checking the index here will lead you to alternative Hebrew etymons for some of
these alleged cognates.
The GARTER
belt, GARAGE, GARRET, GARROTTE and GIRDER are more GR possibilities. HUG should
be from Het-Bhet-Koof, [K]Ha[V]aQ (to embrace see HUG). The close echo
between Jacobs wrestling, Ayin-Bhet-Koof, in Genesis 32:25 and his hug
with Esau in 33:4 is significant. Otherwise, HUG, what a GIRDLE does, and HOG
(an animal of GIRTH) may be from the HG first half of [K]HaGoaR. חןג
[K]HOOG is to make a circle. Hogs are natures roundest beasts.
The belts
of Germany (Gurt and Gurtel) and Rumania (curen) certainly fit
the Edenic K[H]aGOAR (belt), but not as well as the Basque belt: gerriko.
Guttural-liquid-guttural also appears in kaliki, the Hawaiian girdle
(requiring an M231
and S-L . That German
belt is familiar to Hassidic Jews as the Yiddish gartel that GIRDS them
before prayer.
Bible Verses
