full, complete, finished

SLAM is a term in card games, "with reference to its finality." A grand SLAM in baseball also finalizes the action on the bases, with a base-clearing home run. The more familiar SLAM involves shutting a door with noise and force. These SLAMs earn the rare "origin unknown" designation from most dictionaries. Webster's offers, "probably from Old Norse...compare Norwegian dialect slemma"

The finality, completion or fullness of the GRAND SLAM is inherent in   שלם SHaLaiM (full, complete, finished - Deuteronomy25:15; IKings7:51). The term means whole and healthy in Genesis33:18 and Job9:4. Completing a financial transaction or paying remunerative damages involves שלם SHeeLaiM (paying up or paying back - Exodus22:5). The familiar שלום SHaLOAM (peace) is an appropriate "hello" or "goodbye" if the two parties will be or have been completing something peaceably.

Zahlen is to pay in German; chiehlun means conclusion in Chinese. The list of Indo-European roots attached to the AmericanHeritageDictionary includes an sim root that does not appear in the 1985 edition of Indo-European “root”s (published separately). Under "sim (to be whole) - Semitic root" are found words like ISLAM, (MOSLEM), MUSLIM, SALAAM, SALOME (Greek Salome means "peace"), SHALOM and SOLOMON. The etymons cited are Arabic salama (he was safe), Arabic salam (peace) and Hebrew shalom (peace).

The new AHD listing contains S(H)-L-M words too, but under the Indo-European “root” sol (whole). Cognates listed here include CATHOLIC, CONSOLIDATE, HOLO. (as in HOLOCAUST), SAFE, SALUBRIOUS, SALUTATION, SALUTE, SALVAGE, (SALVATION), SAVE, SOLEMN, SOLICITOUS and SOLID. SERENE (L → R) and SILENCE (M → N) may be influenced by SHaLOAM (peace). SHaLOAM (goodbye) might have been corrupted to SO LONG! (goodbye—origin unknown). In Gaelic slan  is healthy, healed, sound, uninjured and whole. With this same S-N from   שלם SHeeLaiM ( whole, intact), one can see how SANITARY and SANE (healthy) is from the Lamed/L dropped.  See SOLEMN.
