Roots

The so-called Indo-European “root” is ghei- 2 (winter).  This is, by voooo linguistics, the alleged source of Latin hibernus, pertaining to winter.

חרף ([K]HoaReF means winter -- Genesis 8:22.  This bitter, sharp season is related to  חריף [K]HaReeYF, sharp, pungent  –  see  PICRIC ACID and  SHARP.

Branches

Latin winter is  hiber na .  Winter in French, hiver, and Spanish, invierno (similar in Italian and Portuguee) are an M132 metathesis of Het-Resh-Phey.   The Het/[K]H is an easy H in Frenh, but elsewhere gets downshifted to a vowel, and is nasalized (extra N). The Resh/R remains, although switching to third place. The Phey shifts bilabials to V.  Frost and freezing in Sumer was chalb.  Winter bitter cold is relative.
