Roots

COGNITION (understanding) is thought to come from a fabricated Indo-European “root” gno (to know).

As with RECOGNITION, one has see around prefixes like co- or re- and suffixes like –tion or -ance to RECOGNIZE, understand, or see, the GN root.  The Indo-European gno  (to know) root is from  Ayin-Yod-Noon,  עין  GHaYiN, to see... thus understand – see EYE.

Branches

The GNOSTICS of Christian rationalism or GNOSTICISM are named from Greek gnosis, knowledge.  The AGNOSTIC is one who cannot see nor understand.  DIAGNOSIS, PHYSIOGNOMY and PROGNOSIS are some of the few sensible and well-known words under the AHD’s Indo-European “root” gno (to know). A harsher guttural lets us hear knowing cognates like CONNOISSEUR, CUNNING, IGNORANT, IGNORE, KEN and  KNOW. The AHD lists KEENING (wailing), but see KEENING.”  Somehow, CAN (able), CON and GNOME are listed here, as well as words like UNCOUTH and KITH which lack any link to the root’s music or meaning.
