Roots

LA[M]P is a nazalized Indo-European “root” lap (to light, burn),  but better linked to a nasalization (extra M) of  the more lamp-like לפיד LaPeeYD, torch, of Genesis 15:17. The end-dental of the Edenic did not stay lit over the many millennia and miles.

Branches

Lamp-like words  are common throughout  Europe, including  French lampe and Polish lampa.  The LAMP’s beginning as a torch is seen in Cicero’s Latin reference to the  lampas (torch race), and the original meaning of French lampadaire (torch-bearer).
