Roots

Both Latin malus (bad) and male (ill) are traced to the root mel (bad).

The "ill" meaning of MAL- words like MALADY should link up to    אמלה   AMooLaH (sick - Ezekiel16:30)  and מרץ    MaRaTS (to be sick – see MALADY), while the MALICIOUS and MALEVOLENT MAL- terms belong with מעל Ma'[A]L (wrongdoing - a verb and noun in Leviticus5:15).

Branches

Other MAL- terms like MALIGN and MALEDICTION seem to favor another meaning of    מעל   Ma'[A]L (fraud, treachery).

Other cognates include DISMAL, MALICE, MALEFACTOR, and MANILLA. Indo-European “root” mel- (to miss, deceive) fits here, but it only adds MALLEMUCK to English.

Bible Verses

Leviticus 5:15 נפשׁ כי־תמעל מעל וחטאה בשׁגגה מקדשׁי יהוה והביא את־אשׁמו ליהוה איל תמים מן־הצאן בערכך כסף־שׁקלים בשׁקל־הקדשׁ לאשׁם׃

“If any one commit a trespass, and sin through error, in the holy things of the LORD, then he shall bring his forfeit unto the LORD, a ram without blemish out of the flock, according to thy valuation in silver by shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a guilt-offering.”
