Roots

The silent MUTE has a clear initial source in the Germanic root mut (source of MUTTER), related to Latin mutus, silent. But the AHD  wants to tie MUTE to words like MUM, MUMPS and MYOPIA, so they concoct an Indo-European “root” called mu- 1 ( imitative of inarticulate sounds).  It’s not so much that linguists are too dumb to hear that MUTE (dumb) and DUMB (mute) are dental-nasal reversed synonyms (MT and DM).  It’s more of a philosophical problem, as they think that words are meaningless, imitative noises that evolved from ape grunts and gestures, and which humans chose to use as agreed communication signals.

The Spanish mute, mudo, points to an etymon with a D and M, the same source of DUMB (silent) – see DUMB.    The ultimate, Edenic source of DM or reversing to MD or MT lack of articulation is Dalet-Mem, DoaM (to be silent -- Leviticus 10:3 .  ד-ם Daled-Mem, דם DoaM, is also Stillness (Isaiah 14:9).       דמם DaMuM is to be silent, and דממה   DiMaMaH (stillness, silence, whisper) is closest in meaning to a low MUTTERING  (reversing to nasal-dental)..

Branches

DaM[A]h, to shed tears, to weep, is audible but hushed.   DeeMaH is to speak in similitudes; an articulate antonym to our Dalet-Mem, and a bridge to the DM likeness seen in DUMMY.  The wet part of D-M weeping is seen at MEAD.

The French muet (mute), like the English, takes the softer dental than Spanish mudo.

Two of the AHD’s alleged cognates of MUTTER than do make sense here areMOT and MOTTO.
