Roots

Old English ne is thought to come from a fabricated Indo-European “root” ne (not).         הניא   HayNeeYE and יניא YaNeeYE are verbs translated "disallow" in Numbers30:6 and 30:9, where a vow is annulled or "said NO to." The infinitive Boon-Vav-Aleph is rendered  NOOE.   Requiring a commom reversal of the Western consonant and vowel, אין AYiN is “none” in Genesis 2:6;   אין AYN is the more common negative combining term. It is reversed for all the vowel-nasal NOs.

Branches

The many cognates of NO and other Hebrew words like  AiN (not or no – Genesis 2:5 -- NO reversed) are seen at INSOMNIA. Most of these are reversed to nasal-vowel, as in Old Irish ni, not . Polish NO is nie; Russian has ne as well as nyet.

Also see “UN-.”  While N negatives dominate the Indo-European family, like ni (neither), "no" is ma in Maya and my in Thai.   Vowel-nasal negative prefixs are common in IE, like  French  and German un-, Dutch  on-  and Italian im and in. ] RW [

The Salishan Indians of the American Northwest refuse by saying lu (no).  Hawaiian ‘ole (L-vowel reversed) means not, without, deny and nothingness.                               לא LO is the primary Hebrew "no" (Genesis 2:20).  English N's from Hebrew L's are documented in an appendix.   The "no" of Germany (nein) and Hungary (nem) recall  מאן M’AyN (to refuse --Exodus 9:2).

Negative extensions include NONE and NOT.
