Roots

A SEROW, the goat antelope of Eastern Asia is from native Tibet or Sikkim name.  Sah[E]eYR or SaGHeeYR means goat, "goat-demon" or "satyr" (Isaiah13:21).  Sah[E]eR or SaGHeeR means hairy (Genesis27:11). Pulling together hairy, sacred goats, the land of Sair, and a hairy twin brother is the Bible’s Esau.

Branches

Say[A]R or SayGHaR (hair – Genesis 25:25) looses a guttural Ayin in Hungarian szo”r (hair).   Pulling the thread of Sin-Ayin-Resh might lead to English HAIR.  There is no earlier source for HAIR than Middle English heer, so the Ayin-to-H shift might have come from Semitic, like the Arabic shaar (hair) version of the Edenic above. The initial S would have been trimmed. Ayin is already GH, so  becoming an H is hardly a “shift.”  That Ayin-to-H change is seen in borrowings as when the Ayin of  [I]BHReeY is rendered as the H of Hebrew.

While S[A]eeYR normally involves goat hair, the Palahvi (Middle Persian) word for the wool-bearing sheep is saora.

Other Ayin (GH)-to-H changes include:

1) Foreign words like Basque baby, haurra, from GHOOLaH (suckling, infant – Isaiah 49:15) and  GHOALaiL  (child, infant Lamentations 2:11) – see GIRL.

Dutch, Danish and Norwegian hals (neck) from Ayin-Lamed, GHoaL , yoke, – see COLLAR  and French hier (yesterday) from Ayin-Bhet-Resh, past – see OVER.

2) HAMADRYAD (a wood nymph) from Greek hama (together, with) plus drys, tree (seen at TREE) – hama is from Ayin-Mem, GHeeM (with – a likely source for HOMO- and HOMEO- words as well).

3) HARLOT (lewd woman, servant, churl, via Old French) from Ayin-Resh-Lamed, GHaReL (uncircumsized – Exodus 12:48… thus a source for CHURL; GhaReLaH came to mean a gentile woman ).

4) HEATHEN and HEATH from Ayin-Tsadi, GHaiTS, (forest, wood – see LUTE – via Indo-European kaito (forest).

5) HEDONISM (from Ayin-Dalen-Noo, [A]iDeN, pleasure – see HEDONISM)

6) HELIX (spiral—Greek) from Ayin-Gimel-Lamed , GhaGoaL (round – see  CYCLE, with other GH-G-L terms metathesizing to HL plus guttural, like HELICOPTER.

7) HERD from Ayin-Dalet-Resh, GHeDeR (flock, herd – see HERD.)

8) HERMES (originally the Greek god of “cunning” –Webster’s) from Ayin-Resh-Mem, GHaRahM, “subtle” (KJV) or “cunning”  – Genesis 3:1.

9) HONEY from Ayin-Noon-Gimel, GHoNeG (delight – see HONEY

10) HOVER  from Ayin-Phey, GHahF (to fly – see AVIATE).

The Modern Greek village,   horio, is from Ayin-Yod-Resh  עיר  (city – Genesis4 :17).

See HYPER (from  עבר G HaBHahR ).
