Roots

SHEER the adjective has a third definition meaning "absolute, downright, unqualified" as well as "perpendicular" or straight and steep as a cliff wall.  ישר YaSHaR means both kinds of uprightness as well: honest and straightforward (ISamuel29:6); even and straight (ISamuel6:12). Webster's only offers Old Norse skiaer (bright, pure) as an etymon for the other meanings of SHEER. The AHD has no Indo-European “root”.

שורה   SHOORaH is a row or line (Job 24:11), while שור SHOOR is a wall (Genesis 49:22). Arabic sur (wall), is said to be loaned from Aramaic.

Branches

The SH-R in SHOORaH (line) and SHOOR (wall) point to a SHORELINE and to SHORE the noun and verb (o SHORING up) – see  SHORE.   A straight line from SHOORaH can be drawn to Hungarian sor (pronounced shawr), queue.  Straight is suroaam in Finnish. More SHEER straightness at “JURISPRUDENCE” and TAURUS.   Besides the Samekh-Resh opposite term off veering off the straight and narrow (see “SWERVE), there is also Sin-Vav-Resh, SOOR, to turn aside – Hosea 9:12.

Straightforwardness recalls Japanese assari (simply , plainly, easily .  A wall’s straight, definitive boundaries reinforces the SURETY of SURE.

 See “SERIES,”  STRETCH and  SHEERING.
