Roots

To SIMULATE (to look like or RESEMBLE) and SIMULTANEOUS (at the SAME time) are both from Latin simul (together with, likewise). More bringing together at ASSEMBLE, from   שלם     SHaLeM (complete, all together). SAME, SEEM and SIMILAR are all ASSEMBLED at Indo-European “root” sem- 1 (one, as one).

סמל $eMeL (image, likeness, SYMBOL, logos) is a SIMULATION.

Perhaps you don’t like the fact that words like SYMBOLISM have a B absent in          סמל $eMeL, but do you prefer the Indo-European “root” g w ele- 1 (to throw, reach) with “cognates” like PAROLE and BALLET?

Deuteronomy4:16 prohibits limiting God by depiction with a סמל $eMeL, an "image in any likeness whatever, having the form of a man or a woman." "Likeness" was the translation of     סמל $eMeL, while "image" was a rendering of      תמונה TiMOONaH or (S)IMOONaH (picture – see   "SEMANTICS" – an entry with many forms of    שם SHeM, a name (Genesis 2:19), that word which SiMulates a thing).  See SAME. For loss of    שם SHeM or reputaion, see ASHAMED.   ”Biblical verses often yoke like-sounding SYNONYMS (SML is like

SMN).

Any variation of SML bears a likeness:   שמ ל ה      SiMLaH is a guise or dress;     שלמה    SaLMaH is a garment. [SIMAR and CYMAR are related garments, attributed to Arabic sammur (sable).] צלם (T)SeLeM is an image, likeness or idol – see   TALISMAN.

Reverse to a liquid-nasal-fricative (SML → RMZ) to get רמז

ReMeZ (hint, indication). A #1-#2 letter flip of SML reveals   משל  MaS(H)aL (parable, allegory, comparison, metaphor, SIMILE).

משל MoaSHeL is resemblance. An SM likeness term is שם   S(H)aiM (name, fame association), as a name is "as one" with the thing it names. A    סמלון  $iMLOAN (yoke), like a SIMILE, yokes two things together of a peculiar ZahN (sort, kind).     זן ZahN in Aramaic means "same," according to the Lexicon.  For frictive-nasal synonyms and antonyms of sameness, see SIN.

In Edenics, turning to related fricative-nasals,  we learn that the  שם SHeM (name – Genesis 2:12) is one with, is the  עצם  [E]TSeM (ESSENCE – see OSTEOMA  of that which is named, deeper than a mere SEMBLANCE or RESEMBLANCE. More at ASHAMED and “SWEMANTICS.”

Branches

Already in Arabic  Edenic Shin/SH becomes an S: ism is name. An antonym for the SM sub-root of SAMENESS is SHOANeH (different) – see   CHANGE. Some cognates of SAME not mentioned earlier include: ANOMALOUS, ASSIMILATE, ENSEMBLE, HAMADRYAD, HAPLOID, HENOTHEISM, HOMEO-, HOMO-, [but note K’iIMOA (like)] HOMILY, SAMSARA, SANSKRIT, SEEMLY, SIMPLE, SINGLE (Latin from semel), SIMPLICITY and SOVIET. To the AHD's list add SYMPTON and scores of SYM- and SYN- words; Greek syn means "with' see SYNOD. SHAM and SHAMANISM relate here as well. No creature is more SIMILAR to man than the SIMIAN; Latin simia means "ape." Perhaps the SENSES, like SMELL, stimulate associative SIMULATIONS, and we should be SENTIENT of relatives in the SM families of SEEMING and SIMILARITY.

Irish samhai means “like”; samhuil is likeness or simile.   Dwelly's Gaelic Dictionary and
MacBain's Etymological Gaelic Dictionary have similar words for a copy or RESEMBLANCE.  [ Fearhas MacFhionnlaigh ]

Beyond the visual, sometimes we only get a whiff of something familiar.

SMELL has no Indo-European “root;  the  best alleged source is a German SML word for smoke. See the nasal-fricative NOSE words at NOZZLE.  The same Samekh-Mem in   סמל $eMeL spells $ahM , spices, aromatics (Exodus 30:34). $aMaM in Arabic means to smell, to be fragrent .    The fragrant  סמדר   $MaDaR, (blossom – Songs  7:13) should be a combination  of  סם Samekh-Mem (smell) + דר D-R (release), as דרור DROAR  (freedom, release – Leviticus 25:19.)   Korean smell is naem-sae,  a reversal of סמן , spice.

More at BALSAM.

For nasal - ffricative smellers like NOSE or Frech nez—see NOZZLE.

סמל $eMeL (likenes) undergoes an M132 metahesis in Finnish silma (eye) and an M213 metathess in Hungarian masolat (copy) .

See global forms of SM likeness (name)  at “SEMANTICS.”

In Chinese, zhen is a symptom and sumiao is a drawing. Name in Chinese is xing, while in Cantonese a surname is sing.

A signed name or one’s title is shomei in Japanese. A SYMBOLIC pennant or flag for the Japanese Shinto is a nusa. Ne$, ENSIGN or flag in Aramaic and Syriac and Psalms 60:6, reverses our fricative-nasal theme of likenesses.   Sammilita is to ASSIMILATE in Hindi.

Bible Verses

Deuteronomy 4:16 פן־תשׁחתון ועשׂיתם לכם פסל תמונת כל־סמל תבנית זכר או נקבה׃

“ lest ye deal corruptly, and make you a graven image, even the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female,”
