Roots

TRIPE (garbage – see similar sense development at “GARBAGE”) was used by Arabs to mean animal entrails, tharb. Arab neighbors were often given treif animal parts that were inedible to Jews who kept dietary laws.

טרף Treif  food means any  unkosher food; literally it refers to animals that have been torn apart (Genesis 37:33). .

Branches

Reverse TRIPE, originally meaning torn (or treif  meat) to find the RPT of RUPTURE.  The AHD creates the Indo-European “root” reup (to snatch – see TROPHY), and cites the

“nasalized”  Latin rumpere (to break) as the source of  ABRUPT (see ABRUPT), BANKRUPT, CORRUPT, DISRUPT, ERUPT and INTERRUPT.   Latin rumpere hardly speaks to the T in these “rupt” words.  But considering an M231 metathesis of DTeRePH was considered unkosher.
